Original artwork from my 1st solo art show in Atlanta, GA entitled “Personal Best: A Journey of Wins, Losses, and Lessons

“Man FUCK CANCER!!!” is the only thought that comes to mind whenever I think of cancer.

Cancer sucks. The impact it has on those battling it and their families is devastating. I know so many people who have been impacted or are currently being impacted by this cruel disease. Thankfully, I’ve had family members young and old win the fight, so I know the resilience within people and the healing power of God, but I have an aunt battling cancer right now and its so painful to see her going through it. Dede is my second mama. I probably spent more time at her house than my own growing up. And I know plenty others who can say the same. She has always been the life of the party and the backbone of our family, so even during this time she still makes everyone laugh with ease, and we all still look to her and admire her strength. She’s a fighter, so I know she’ll be good. It just hurts so bad man. I cried every time I worked on this piece. I stopped trying to hold it in. I guess I just needed something to help me process my emotions, so I just let em flow.

I began with some basic sketches to guide me but for the most part I was feeling everything out on the canvas. I allowed my emotions to be expressed in each brushstroke, each revision, and each adaptation. A few weeks before my show was due to open, I was on a conference call with my family, and Dede confessed that she kept dreaming about the word “REMISSION”. That word really stuck with me, so I knew I had to add it to the painting, and once I did, it finally felt complete.

I love you Dede. Keep fighting. Remission is on the way…
